Apex Street Bridge Historical Society

Current

The current status of the bridge is as pictured below. In a 4-3 vote on August 2, 2004, the Durham City Council voted to not rebuild the Apex Street Bridge for vehicular traffic and ordered staff to seek funding to convert it into a bicycle and pedestrian bridge. In the interim, the community of the bridge intends to enhance the current appearance and beautify the areas leading to it. The Apex Street Bridge is the intersection of the existing old bicycle path through Durham and the new American Tobacco Trail. It is the only such intersection in the City and we hope to make the bridge an oasis on the trails. The connector ramp is complete that connects the American Tobacco Trail with the Apex Street Bridge. See it here. For an idea of what we envisioned it to look like, go here. This will never happen now that the bridge is to be torn down and not replaced. maybe we can get a historical marker or something there to tell of its place in history.
